A Thames houseboat that once smuggled Allied airmen out of Nazi-occupied Europe has been put up for sale.

Actress Susan Penhaligon, 74, who has starred alongside Dame Judi Dench and Sir David Jason, has called the historic barge home for the past 27 years.

The stage and screen actress completely gutted and rebuilt the 84ft long barge and raised the roof to make standing easier.

Located in a secure residential mooring on the River Thames in Brentford, west London, the three-bedroom houseboat could be yours for £850,000.

The 1922 barge is packed with history and was used in the Second World War to smuggle British airmen out of Holland and across the North Sea.

It was last captained on the Dutch canals by a woman, who carried on her husband's business after he died.

Now the engine has been decommissioned and it is a quirky floating home.

The property has 1,161 sq ft of accommodation and is kitted out like any ordinary house would be.

It has a 30ft long living/dining room, a kitchen, three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There is also a characterful wheelhouse with doors to the deck.
